"1.
When shooting any subject whether it be landscapes, people or buildings there is
an optimum time where the light is at its best. If you want to take well lit
architectural photographs then you will have to explore the early and late
light (dawn and dusk).
2. When composing images too many people stop where they are standing and think
what a lovely picture. Explore your compostion. Don't use zoom lenses. Use your
legs instead. Move. Always move. Think about your compostion in your head. Don't
let the camera do it all for you. Think about it. And move.
3. If you are attracted by patterns then it doesn't always work to go close with
a wide angle lense, this can distort interesting patterns. The opposite it also
through, sometimes images that look boring on a long lense can suddenly come to
life on a shorter lens. Think about the lens you are shooting with. Move back.
Not everything works wide. Not everything works long. Be prepared to
experiment. be prepared to be wrong!
Look at your photographs. Ask yourself is it the best possible photograph that
you could take of the subject? Have you found the best light, the best
compostion, the best angle? Have you tried photographing it on different lenses
from different positions. It comes back to moving. Move and experiment. You will
not always get a better image by moving but you will learn a lot about your
photography and what makes a good image.
Too many photographers become slaves to their equipment. Have the confidence to
develop and realise your own vision.
The results:
1st Place - DarrenG
2nd Place - JohnDunne
3rd Place - Rene (much better if cropped square - keep right hand side of image)
I will not talk about the individual images suffice to say the winning images
were chosen because they showed the most imagination and the best efforts at
interesting composition and use of light."
